Red-throated Ant Tanager
Sarapiquí
Here's a prime example of a bird that must have been named by a committee: much more than the throat is red, they eat fruit just as readily as insects, and they aren't even tanagers at all! As it turns out, red-throated ant tanagers are much closer to cardinals than they are to the tanager family. Of the other birds it can be found with, only the crimson-collared tanager approaches it in size, which is considerable. This species can be difficult to attract, so photographing one, even on a rather overgrown branch, was a highlight of my 2022 trip to Sarapiquí.
