Juvenile King Vulture

Boca Tapada

Young king vultures are blacker than the adults and lack the orange skin on the neck, though the juvenile bird here is already starting to develop it. While in the past, king vultures never went anywhere near humans, to say nothing of humans with huge cameras, they have become more accustomed to our presence over time and now tend to ignore people instead of flying away from them. Now, with a little patience, we can get pictures of them at a distance that doesn't require a spotting scope, and even the younger vultures figure out fairly quickly that the folks in the hide aren't there to do them any harm.
