Red-legged Honeycreeper

Sarapiquí

The female red-legged honeycreeper is far less striking than the blue-and-black male, but with one look at her red legs, it's clear which species she is. Along with the larger green honeycreeper, the red-legged is a common sight in the lowlands. I was able to capture this female in the bend of a grapefruit tree branch, where she was waiting on some other larger birds to clear off before making her own approach to a feeder. Almost all of the leafy cover on the branch is not growing from the tree itself, but rather, it's a collection of moss and vines that thrive in the hot, humid climate of the Caribbean slope.
