A northern grey saltator on a mossy branch in the rain

Rain Dancer

La Trinidad de Dota

Given that the word saltator in Latin literally means "dancer", the light rain coming down wrote the title of this image for me. This northern grey saltator barely held position long enough to get two frames off, and then provided me with a wonderful sequence of blurry heads and tails toward the camera. The species is found at low and middle altitudes, but the clue to where this particular bird lives is in the leafy details: the dark red moss and tiny bromeliads (look for it in line with the bird's back foot) covering the branch don't grow in the lowlands. To find those colors, you have to go up to where the rain forest ends and the cloud forest starts, around 2000 meters above sea level in Dota Canton. where the air is thin, the fog and rain plentiful, and the bird life unlike anything else in the country.
