An orange-chinned parakeet on a branch against a dark background

Orange-chinned Parakeet

Sarapiquí

A solo parakeet isn't always an easy shot to get, since they arrive in packs, group up, and immediately start defending their newfound territory from every other bird in existence. There's a reason I habitually refer to these guys as the Little Green Mafia. But on occasion, as was the case for this photograph, one parakeet will choose a pretty perch and allow for a portrait that sets their brilliant greens, oranges, and yellows against the dark green colors of the surrounding rain forest. True to form, this pose didn't last long, and my subject went right back to doing what his species does best: devouring every last bit of food in sight with eleven of his best friends.
