A ruffed grouse perches on a log in the woods during the fall season in Vermont

October Gold

Morrisville, Vermont

In a thick stand of hemlock trees in northern Vermont, only about an hour's drive from the Canada border, a male ruffed grouse stands tall on a fallen log. Dapples of sunlight filtering through the dense treetops show up as speckles in the distance, while all around, the change from green to yellow signals the approaching autumn season in the Northeast. It's typically the last chance for woodland species such as grouse to stock up on nutrients for the winter, when the most accessible food sources will be covered in several feet of snow.
