A male cardinal perched on spruce cones

Northern Cardinal

Montréal, Québec

A background of fresh white snowfall and some spruce tree cones make a classic winter scene for an obliging male northern cardinal. Île Notre-Dame, between the main island of Montréal and the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River, provides a small but important wildlife habitat for overwintering birds. In the summer months, the island's F1 track opens for the Canadian Grand Prix, but the crowds are nowhere to be found once the snow flies, and the only racing to be found is usually from the resident wild turkeys who come running every time another car pulls into the parking lot.
