A northern gannet landing in a seabird colony

Look Out Below

Percé, Québec

There's nothing easy about coming in to land when every available landing spot is taken up by other birds. Gannets tend to land with a technique best described as "crashing into the bird pile" since their long, narrow wings are perfect for diving and swimming underwater, but not much good for slowing down and executing a graceful landing. On top of that, wherever they manage to plunk themselves down, arriving gannets will usually get pecked repeatedly by all the birds around them until they make it back to their own nests. It's all in a day's work when you're in a seabird colony, and thirty thousand of your closest friends have to all share the same space!
