A great kiskadee on a branch in the rain

Great Kiskadee

Sarapiquí

The great kiskadee sports an onomatopoeia —a word that phonetically imitates the sound it describes— for a name in English and in Spanish: "kiskadee" and "bienteveo" are both approximations of what speakers of each language think the bird's high-pitched, three-note call sound like. They are large flycatchers that range from the far south of Texas and Western Mexico all the way down through Uruguay and central Argentina, placing Central America squarely within their range. The only barrier to seeing them is elevation; you won't find one unless you're at low altitudes.

Just a touch of afternoon rain had arrived when this kiskadee decided to frame himself nicely against the long leaves of a bromeliad. The bird's small yellow crown is just visible on the top of his head.
