Collared Aracari

Boca Tapada

The sun is barely up, but the collared aracari is already wide awake and looking for something to eat. Catching a common species in an over-the-shoulder pose is one of my favorite techniques for creating a more interesting composition. It creates a sense of motion within the image and helps keep more of the subject in focus, since the eye —the principal focal point of both the camera and the viewer— will line up more closely with the rest of the bird's body and, often times, the perch.

Aracaris are something of a toucan mafia in the rainforest: while other species tend to arrive solo, these birds come barrelling in with five or six friends at a time, and left to their own devices, they won't leave until they've found and gobbled down all the food sources. I've found that the trick is to photograph the first arrival; the other birds are kept out of the frame, and the one bird by itself holds a more alert posture.
