A gray catbird perched on a pine branch

Gray Catbird

Grantham, New Hampshire

The handsome and extremely vocal gray catbird is yet more proof that ornithologists don't take creativity into account when naming bird species: it's a bird, it's gray in color, and it really does sound just like a meowing cat when it calls, so it got the name "gray catbird" almost by default. Catbirds spend the warmer months in the northeast, where they can be a bit easier to hear than to see, but feeders will often draw them out, and the occasional internet video has shown the odd individual to even become accustomed to eating from hands. No such luck in this case, since a spate of bear sightings put the kibosh on any and all bird feeding activities, but I was able to make do when I found a group of catbirds hopping around in a stand of pine trees.
