A close-up of a keel-billed toucan

Golden Hour Toucan

Boca Tapada

A bit of shade against sun at the end of the day worked perfectly for this keel-billed toucan, who perched on the top of a pole in the shadow of a building while golden sunlight lit up the jungle in the background. The shade on the bird allowed me to photograph him without sacrificing an inch of fine feather and color detail. Seeing this "rainbow beak" or pico iris, as he's known in Spanish, is all but guaranteed in northern Costa Rica, and there's never any shortage of antics and interesting poses when they show up.
