Curve-billed Thrasher

Green Valley, Arizona

Along with the cactus wren, curve-billed thrashers are a desert bird you can locate by throwing a rock and walking to wherever it lands; you'll probably find one nearby. As common as they are, their striking orange eyes and wolf-whistle calls make them stand out from other species such as the larger and much more colorful long-billed thrasher, with which they share a portion of their range in Texas and northern Mexico. In Arizona, on the other hand, these are the only thrashers around, and human presence seldom bothers them too much. This individual was photographed south of Tucson on a cloudy morning —a rare event, considering the almost eighty-percent chance of any given day being sunny— and the diffuse overcast light allowed me to photograph well into the morning without harsh shadows and highlights.
