Crested Guan
Boca Tapada
My December 2024 visit to Boca Tapada turned up a new lowland species. Crested guans are big, turkey-like birds that range from southern Mexico through Central America and the northern coastal regions of Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. The name doesn't show any commonality with North American turkeys in English, but in Spanish, it's easy to see that guans (pavas), curassows (pavones), and turkeys (pavos) are all members of the same family.
Habitat destruction and hunting have thinned their numbers to near-threatened status, but protected areas in Costa Rica have allowed them to recover to a degree. This bird was one of three crested guans who made regular visits to our lodge in Boca Tapada, about ten miles south of the Nicaragua border.
