Cholla Topper

Precisely zero humans have ever had a positive experience with the jumping cholla, possibly the most infamous cactus in the entire Sonoran Desert. Needle-sharp spines cover it from trunk to tip, and simply brushing up against it can cause them, along with whatever part of the cactus they're growing from, to lodge in clothing or skin. As an added bonus, the spines are barbed, making removal just as painful as entry, and broken-off bits of cactus can easily lie unseen on the ground, just waiting for an errant foot to come and step on them (and yes, the needles will go through some shoes, just ask me how I know). For us two-leggeds, chollas are something to look at from a distance, and avoid touching whenever possible. But for a cactus wren, they're just another plant, and not only can they climb on and around them with ease, they even go so far as to build their nests in the cacti, turning the thorns into a ready-made defensive perimeter. And if they find a particularly tall, conspicuous cholla, they turn it into their own lookout and singing post, which is exactly what this cactus wren is doing here. A conveniently-placed creosote bush in the background provided the background, which lit up a dark yellow-brown as the sun began set over the desert.
