Cactus Wren

Tucson, Arizona

The arm of a cholla cactus provides a natural vantage point for a cactus wren in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. A first impression of these birds doesn't usually suggest that they're wrens, given how much bigger they are in comparison with other species, but their loud singing and willingness to use absolutely anything as a nest or a perch gives away their real classification: these guys are wrens through and through. As the sun sets over the desert, it's a common sight to find one singing away at the top of a tall cactus, or even flying a circuit between several of them. There was no song in it for me this time around, but the bird couldn't have chosen a much better spot to land.
