Brown-hooded Parrot

Boca Tapada

If orange-chinned parakeets are the little green mafia of Costa Rica, brown-hooded parrots are the big green gang. Although this parrot occurs on both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of the country, the only reliable population for photography is found in Boca Tapada, at a lodge where the parakeets (seemingly knowing that they're going to be dominated and pushed around by a much larger species of parrot) tend to stay well away. The difficulty with these birds isn't finding them or even getting close to them, since they're well used to people; it's getting one —and only one— by itself. Often times, they show up in large groups just like the parakeets do, and there isn't an inch of branch that doesn't wind up with a parrot on it. Such a spectacle is amusing to watch as they all fight for the best position, but it doesn't make for the best photographs. So when I spotted this parrot by himself on an attractive perch, I wasted no time composing and shooting. Apart from the namesake brown head and neck, we can also see another interesting field marl in the little red patch below and behind the eye.
