A brown-hooded parrot on a branch in the rain

Bajo la Lluvia

Boca Tapada

A brief shower in between breaks of sun is typical tropical rainforest weather in the north of Costa Rica, where brown-hooded parrots occasionally mix in with the smaller orange-chinned parakeets. At one lodge in Boca Tapada, the parakeets disappear entirely, and these garish parrots show up in groups of ten or more at first light, sticking around as long as they can find food. There isn't much to shoot when the sun comes out at midday, since the strong light will create nothing but highlights and shadows, but when this rain cloud parked itself over the forest, it blocked the direct light and added a bit of extra background ambience.
