Black-cheeked Woodpecker

Sarapiquí

Black-cheeked woodpeckers are common in the lowland rain forest areas of Costa Rica, although the name is a bit misleading. The areas one might readily identify as the bird's "cheeks" are tan and not black at all. Females have a short red stripe on the back of the neck, while in males, such as this, the strip runs from the base of the neck all the way to the forehead. Even when you're a bird who spends the day drilling holes into trees with your face, living in the tropics tends to give you a bit more color to work with.
