A female acorn woodpecker on a branch

Acorn Woodpecker

La Trinidad de Dota

A female acorn woodpecker clings to a mossy branch on a dark afternoon in the mountain cloud forest. In Spanish, they get the name "carpintero payaso" or "clown woodpecker" from their garish coloring, odd calls, and entertaining antics, though they can be something of a problem for those unfortunate enough to own a wooden house in prime nesting territory. As soon as the sun had come up on my second day in Dota, I was woken up by a pair of these woodpeckers drilling a nesting hole into the wall of my cabin.
