A black-bellied plover in the water at sunset

Black-bellied Plover

Tierra Verde, Florida

The very last bit of sunlight on a Florida Gulf Coast beach lights up a black-bellied plover. In only a few weeks, this bird will likely be on his (or her; there's no way to tell the sexes of this species apart) way up to the arctic to raise the next generation of plovers. Florida beaches provide food, water, and shelter to the birds as they prepare for the trip. They also give photographers an opportunity to shoot shorebirds in some absolutely beautiful light!
