A common loon in winter plumage in golden October light, surrounded by the reflections of the changing leaves in New Hampshire.

Autumn Gold

Grantham, New Hampshire

Loons molt out of their breeding plumage at the end of summer, but there are still plenty of chances to photograph them in their winter colors against the reflections of New England's renowned fall foliage. This individual was swimming through a glassy surface of reflected greens and yellows while I floated nearby in a kayak. Only a few days a year, if any, allow for full sun, calm winds, and peak autumn colors, so any chance to get out on the water when all three line up is a moment I won't pass up. What the loons lack in their customary black and white is more than made up for by their surroundings.
