A black-capped chickadee pauses on top of a sumac tree against a background of fresh snow in Quebec.

Winter White

Châteauguay, Québec

Even smaller in size than the red berry clusters hanging overhead, black-capped chickadees are year-long residents of eastern Canada and a favorite of park visitors and backyard birdwatchers alike. I captured this individual in a staghorn sumac tree as he was flitting from place to place, in search of food after a heavy snowfall the night before. The white all around the subject is a completely natural effect created by using a snowbank as a background, exposing for the bird, and allowing the snow to blur out to a detail-free white.
