A Wilson's snipe calling as it walks along a log.

Wilson's Snipe

Tewksbury, Québec

It's always a treat when you get a chance to photograph a bird that would normally see you coming a mile away and fly off before you've even noticed it's there in the first place. Such is certainly the case with the Wilson's snipe, a medium-sized resident of lakes and wetlands that prefers to stay well hidden and will quickly fly away if it feels threatened. Getting close to one is no small task, but for one morning north of Québec City where a displaying male paid absolutely no attention to my friend and me as we photographed from a pair of kayaks. This male was walking back and forth along a floating log, calling as he went, and the two of us could simply shoot and marvel at how unconcerned this normally shy bird was acting just a stone's throw away from the cameras.
