A white-crowned sparrow shows off his black and white racing stripes while clinging to an evergreen branch on Canada's Vancouver Island. They will sing on just about anything and never turn down a nice flat, steady rock, but when necessity dictates a bit more vocal projection, the top of a spruce tree is as good a platform as any. Once they find a choice spot, they go about demonstrating that the concept of aggressive singing isn't just for the opera; sparrows may as well have invented it.
