A male volcano hummingbird on native paramo flowers.

Volcano Hummingbird

San Gerardo de Dota

Barely the size of the first joint of your thumb, this tiny male volcano hummingbird only lives at the highest elevations in Central America, where he gathers nectar from the native plants that grow at the top of Cerro de la Muerte. It's less common to see males than to see females, which are quite easy to find at backyard hummingbird feeders. They have to be on the lookout for larger hummers (which is basically every other species when you're that small), but they still manage to fend for themselves well enough.

This male has a slate-blue gorget, marking him as the nominate subspecies, the Talamanca volcano hummingbird.
