Boca Tapada

This king vulture is what might be termed a near-adult: not a fully mature bird, but well past the point where its entire body is black, as is the case with juveniles. The characteristic orange and red on the head have developed, and the only thing left on the biological to-do list is for the grey feathers on the wings to give way to all-white. But even though this isn't the complete adult plumage, I thought this bird cut a handsome figure all the same, looking both dignified and just a little bit intimidating. For the undertakers of the avian world, tasked with clearing away anything that has long since given up the ghost, it's a fitting look.
