Te Quiero Verde

San Gerardo de Dota

Whenever I get to travel to the cloud forest, I always think of the first few lines of Federico García Lorca's famous poem, Romance sonámbulo:
Verde, que te quiero verde
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Just about everything in the mountains is green, including the smallest toucan in Costa Rica, aptly named the northern emerald toucanet. I had missed them on previous trips, but had some luck in 2022 when several of them came in at once. For a region called the Cerro de la muerte, or "mountain of death", there sure seems to be a lot of life up there.
