A male summer tanager in the rain

Summer Tanager

La Trinidad de Dota

Few tropical birds can match the summer tanager in the color category. The male is crimson red from bill to tail, and the female is a pastel orange, making both of them stand out instantly against a green background. The species is named quite appropriately, as it seeks out the North American summer in our warmer months, and then migrates to Central and South America, where the period from December through April is also referred to as "summer" (verano). Wherever this handsome tanager goes, summer weather won't be far behind him.

During a seriously ugly weather day in La Trinidad de Dota, a middle elevation spot where the highland cloud forest begins to take over from the lowland rain forest, we struggled with everything from gusty winds to breaks of unwelcome bright sun and drenching rain. Of course, the summer tanager chose a moment right in the middle of a downpour to pose for us!
