The golden hour in the desert of southern Arizona is unlike any other in the United States. Thirty minutes before the sun disappears, it covers the once-harsh daylight transforms into a rich, saturated wash of orange and yellow. It's hard for me to think of a better time or place to encounter cactus wrens hopping around a stand of jumping chollas, a cactus whose aggressive defenses are particularly useful to the birds. Those same spines that will easily go through a predator's skin provide the perfect spot to build a nest with a ready-made defensive perimeter. For most animals that would be tempted to rob a nest, the cholla is so loosely held together that even lightly brushing up against it causes entire pieces to lodge in the body and break away from the rest of the plant.
Chollas can't actually jump, of course, but with how easy it is for even a casual passerby to come away decorated with unwanted bits of cactus, they've more than earned the rights to the name.
