Sanderling
Tierra Verde, Florida
The famous "wind-up toy bird", sanderlings never seem to stop moving, their legs cycling back and forth as they run quick enough to simply become a blur to the human eye. They are some of the world's longest-distance migrants, occasionally flying from the south of Argentina and Chile in the winter all the way to the high Arctic in summer, before doing the entire trip in reverse once the breeding season is finished.
During that short time when they're headed north, sanderlings go from almost entirely white to brilliant shades of red and orange. Standing in a bit of water that amounted to little more than a puddle, this bird is showing off its full breeding plumage.
