Thick carpets of moss and lichen coat the stones lining the ground on Vancouver Island. For a white-crowned sparrow, it's as good a stage as any to belt out his springtime song, no microphone required. Like the species on the East Coast, white-crowned sparrows out west can get seriously fired up if they hear another sparrow in their territory. This one was calling out to any other bird in the vicinity, and by the time he hopped back down from his pedestal, it's a safe bet that they had all received the message.
