A greater roadrunner on a dead saguaro cactus in the Arizona desert.

Roadie's Roost

Green Valley, Arizona

Perched at the top of a long-dead saguaro cactus trunk, there's no doubt who the boss of this little patch of desert is. When a roadrunner shows up, the smaller critters have to be on their guard, since these guys don't discriminate when it comes to lunchtime. Anything from bugs to snakes, lizards, and birds is on the menu if the roadrunner thinks it will fit in his beak. Luckily, this time around, only insects wound up as the main course, but according to the landowner I was with, the individual in the picture has been known to make a quick meal out of his fellow birds.
