Red-winged Blackbird
Moncton, New Brunswick
The surest sign of spring in many parts of North America is the shrill, three-note call of the male red-winged blackbird, a migratory species that is one of the first to arrive when the temperatures warm and the ground begins to thaw. The jet black males fly from cattail to cattail, displaying their brilliant red and yellow shoulder patches as they stake out their territories. By the time the females arrive a few weeks later, the boys have mostly settled the property disputes, and they can both get to work raising the next generation of blackbirds.
