A male red knot in a tidal pool

Red Knot

Tierra Verde, Florida

Nothing matches the red color of a male red knot in breeding plumage. The name "knot" supposedly comes from the sound they make when calling, which to me sounds much more like "do-it, do-it, do-it" than anything else. The red, on the other hand, is unmistakable: each spring, the male exchange their brown and grey feathers for a brilliant cinnamon orange-red. Gulf of Mexico sunset light provided the best possible compliment to the bird's own colors, and while it took a while for me to get the shot, the time spent laying down in all manner of sand, mud and other things I'd rather not envision was well worth the end result.
