A female red-breasted nuthatch clinging to an evergreen branch

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Moncton, New Brunswick

Nuthatches are common sights in coniferous forests, where their habit of climbing down tree trunks and branches head-first often earns them the nickname "upside-down bird". Red-breasted nuthatches are smaller than the white-breasted, with a higher, faster call note, but they make up for their small size in antics and personality. I've lost count of the number of times one has sat on my camera, hand, shoulders, or even my head. Fortunately, this female decided the top of a spruce tree was a more appropriate perch than photography equipment.
