A female red-breasted nuthatch on a spruce branch with cones

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Moncton, New Brunswick

Few birds stand still for more than a moment or two, but the red-breasted nuthatch is in a class by itself: constantly on the move, flitting about from branch to branch as it punctuates its movements with high, sharp, squeaky calls. I often have one or more pairs of these birds coming in, but the males can to be rather uncooperative, seemingly knowing exactly what to do and where to go in order to frustrate all attempts at a pleasing photograph. The smaller, lighter-colored females, on the other hand, are occasionally open to spending a second or two on a choice branch. I wound up with an image that's pure New Brunswick: evergreen forest, spruce cones, and one of the province's iconic songbird species.
