A Canada jay perched in the snow in the Adirondack Mountains of New York

Little Winter Watcher

Adirondack Park, New York

The snow starts to fly, but this Canada jay remains undisturbed. A little bad weather isn't going to deter this classic boreal forest bird from watching over any humans who come through his woods. Although it's hard to determine size from a photograph alone, Canada jays aren't nearly as small and dainty chickadees, despite having a strong enough resemblance that in French, the word for them translates literally to "chickadee jay". While a chickadee will easily fit in the palm of a human hand, with room for at least one more at that, Canada jays are big, brash, and blue jay-sized. They like perching on people as well, but unlike the dainty little songbirds, when one of these birds lands on your hand, you notice immediately!
