The brilliant blue and green lesser violetear is one of the buzz bombs of the Costa Rican highlands. They are attracted to feeders and flowers alike, and whatever time they don't spend feeding, they use to chase away rival hummingbirds, which they at least attempt to intimidate by flaring those dark blue "ear" patches. I caught this one in a rare moment of repose in the cloud forest in between turns at a nearby feeder. Don't let his small size fool you; this hummer will throw down as soon as a different species gets too close!
