Juvenile Common Loon
Grantham, New Hampshire
Loons have hair days too, it seems: this juvenile is only half molted, with patches of brown fluffy down feathers still stuck to his head, neck, and rear. In a few more weeks, he will have his first-winter plumage and look more or less the same as a winter adult. The better-known breeding plumage —black and white with an iridescent path around the neck— won't come in until the following spring, and to get to that point, he has to make it through an unforgiving northern winter. With these birds commonly heading out to see when their lakes freeze over, it's often hard to tell who has survived and who has not until ice-out happens.
