A greater yellowlegs walking in the water in Quebec.

Greater Yellowlegs

Sainte-Martine, Québec

Perhaps the least-creatively named shorebird in the book, the greater yellowlegs is exactly what the label says it is: a bird with bright yellow legs that's slightly larger than the lesser yellowlegs. At an old grist mill south of Montreal, there's a spot where I can walk in the shallow Châteauguay River and come close to the migrating shorebirds. A bit of golden evening light brings the natural colors of the bird and its habitat right out.
