Great Curassow

Boca Tapada

Great curassows are about the size of a wild turkey, and both are in the same taxonomic order galliformes, which also includes the pheasants, quail, and guinea fowl. As game birds, curassows have suffered from poaching in Central America, and as a result they hardly come running up to have their picture taken, but after about thirty minutes of sitting on the ground with my camera, this handsome male decided I was safe enough to approach. When he stood still for a moment, I fired off a couple of close-up frames with the bird in relative shade, and the background still lit up by the evening sun.
