Gambel's Quail

A male Gambel's quail, the most common of the three quail species that live in Arizona, jumps to the top of a long-dead cholla cactus branch. Once the plant dies and dries up, the skin and sharp spines begin to flake off, and eventually, all that's left is a smooth, wooden core. For game birds like the Gambel's quail, cacti that have long since passed their prime can be useful as lookout perches, where they can survey their surroundings and get a good sense of who else is nearby. But they need to take care to make their stay brief, since being exposed at the top of a branch means everyone else can see you, too, including other birds with a taste for quail.
