The sun rises over the southern Arizona mountains, and a Gambel's quail perches in the golden morning light atop the wooden skeleton of a dead saguaro cactus. Although the rest of the saguaro has long since decayed away, its internal ribs still provide shelter for the various fauna of the Sonoran Desert.
