Northern gannets don't look like very affectionate birds at first blush. Gannet colonies are the sort of place where knock-down-drag-out fights are as commonplace as at a hockey game. A bird that steps out of its narrow bit of nesting real estate, even if only to take off or land, will find itself being pecked at by a gauntlet of its nearest neighbors, and those who don't get the message will find themselves locking beaks and tumbling around until one gives up. The only birds gannets are ever friendly with are their mates, who are the only gannets that can go up to another gannet and not get an immediate beak stab for their trouble. In fact, in a strong contrast to how gannets normally behave towards each other, they are very affectionate to the one bird they pair up with, and can often be seen preening each other or "fencing" by tapping their beaks together in a back-and-forth motion. The colony at Percé has an added bonus of being on an island, about a mile straight uphill from the only dock. But shooting at any gannet colony will present a similar challenge of isolating the subject, since gannets don't come in small groups, and the interaction between two birds is often completely or partially blocked by another. Every so often, a head of two will stick up, and the most one can hope for is a few seconds of unobstructed view. Sometimes, it's much easier said than done!
