A male downy woodpecker on a branch with cones, against a white snow background

Downy Woodpecker

Montréal, Québec

Full-white backgrounds are an option whenever the heavy winter snows make their way up the east coast and put the city of Montréal, Canada squarely in their cross-hairs. It's not necessary to "Photoshop" anything out, since everything behind the subject that's buried under a foot of snow just blurs out to a plain white once the regular adjustments are applied in post-processing. I decided to shoot this friendly little woodpecker a bit smaller in the frame to highlight the branch and spruce cones. The bird may not be on a vertical surface, but as all woodpeckers are wont to do, he still makes full use of his tail as a kickstand.
