A common murre perched on the edge of a cliff, surrounded by tall grass

Common Murre

St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador

Called "turrs" by the locals, common murres are cliff nesters who come ashore in the summer months to nest and raise their chicks. True to form, on the other side of this bird, at a distance of less than a foot, lies a three hundred-or-so foot drop straight down into the North Atlantic. I had a safe enough spot on the side of the cliff to lie on with my camera, but even so, it was a task to not consciously think about the fact that my lens's minimum focus distance was the only thing between me and a gravity assist that no human could possibly hope to survive.

Around a dozen common murres hang out on this particular spot at the end of the walking trail at Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland. They're entirely unfazed by humans, so the hard part was getting into position with the camera in a place where the long grass would aid in the composition. That, and not looking down.
