Common Loon
Stoneham-et-Tewksbury, Québec
On a still and cloudy morning slightly north of Québec City, an adult common loon glides past as he calls out to his nearby mate and chick. Loon parents often take it in turns to fish for their young, with one diving while the other remains with the baby. This lake's pair had only just hatched their chick, but they were both often seen fishing some distance away from it at the same time, which isn't the best idea when the nearest neighbors are bald eagles and common snapping turtles.
