Cape Shore Afternoon

St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador

A norther gannet wheels toward the nesting colony at Bird Rock, the centerpiece of the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve, as the afternoon sunlight illuminates the sheer cliffs all around. Sunny afternoons on the Newfoundland Cape Shore can be hard to come by during the summer season, as the peninsula is crossed by fog banks and overcast skies more often than not, but its rich offshore fishery attracts tens of thousands of nesting seabirds each year, along with several centuries' worth of local fishermen. Newfoundlanders have long held to the saying "Cape St. Mary's pays for all" if you're having a poor fishing trip —there's even a famous folk song about it— but the birds have known it to be true for longer still.
